I’m embarking on a new set of landscapes that focus on the hidden, and the multi-layered nature of our physical environment.
Recently, I watched a BBC program about Australian Aboriginal artists and their ancient (c.70,000-year-old) culture. It made me quite envious of their artistic connection to the land and to their heritage and I wanted to investigate our own heritage in this way. Cave paintings, rock carvings, stone circles, pit burials, animal-gods, all of these ancestral creations that are – mostly – hidden to us now.
Those of you that know my practice will understand that a great deal of my time is spent walking, listening and ‘feeling’ my physical environment before painting starts. In a method described by Aboriginal Australian’s as ‘dreaming’, I’m dreaming my story here in Wiltshire. Watch this space!
