So, it’s finally come: D-Day. I’m no longer ’employed’ but I do have a lot of jobs to do, and my main task it to get on with making art. I’ve done a few sketches, here and there, but not a great deal since Cornwall. I’ve tried noticing things a lot more and I’ve been looking at other artists that I like. So far, my influences are Joan Mitchell, Matisse, Bonnard, Joan Eardly, Cy Twombly and countless others. I’m hoping that my ‘style’ will just happen – I don’t know how I’m supposed to develop it, or just let it evolve naturally. Maybe it just ‘is’?
I’ve also been wondering about the techniques of painting and if I should learn more about them. I’ve got it in my head that the old masters had all these tricks up their sleeves, which I don’t know about. I’m sure it is the case.
I managed to get two paintings into an open exhibition at the Thelma Hulbert Gallery in Honiton. Private view this Saturday 4th June http://www.thelmahulbert.com
And I found out I got in to the exhibition on my last day at work. I’m seeing that as a sign that I’m on the right track! JM
