I’ve always been interested in light and the way that a certain blade of sunlight, or a reflection or shadows trigger deep ‘memories’. ‘Senses’ is probably a better word than memory. Almost pre-memory. Something that grows with us as we are created within the womb. I wonder, is this the same for all animals?
Noticing light is one of the things that I’ve noticed that I do. Almost subconsciously now. But being aware of this is a new deal for me. Noticing everything I do (or don’t do) is part of my exploration into living more artfully.
Of course a ‘real’ artist has to be at one with light and the way that it affects colour, mood, depth, etc. particularly within painting. Vermeer springs to mind with his mastering of shadows and reflections.
I choose – at this point in my journey – to be happy noticing light as it circulates in my life. Anytime that both light and a sense of the ‘other’ appear (spirit, God, whatever you identify with), that’s when I’m most aware of myself.
